What is the difference between the cottages and the glamping tents?
The cottages are roughly arranged in an arc around a park-like garden. As originally the historic home of the Baber family, they vary in size and character. Each of the cottages is positioned for a view of the open vista of the Waterberg and our beautfiul evening sunsets.
The tents are a short walk away and arranged along a ridge, each facing west for the view and the sunset.
How many people can each cottage and tent sleep?

Each of the 10 tents sleeps 5.
Which cottages are suitable for families with young children?
Rose Cottage and Butterfly Cottage are most suitable for families with very young children.
All of the cottages are suitable for slightly older children.
Which cottages are suitable for couples/romantic geteaways?
Butterfly Cottage and Rose Cottage are most suitable for romantic getaways.
The upstairs bedroom in Bushwillow Cottage is also very romantic.
The tents are also romantic.
Do the cottages and tents have fireplaces or heaters for the winter?
All of the tents have stoves.
Bushwillow Cottage and Windsong Cottage have fireplaces.
Because we are fully on solar, we cannot have heaters. In the cottages, we provide hotwater bottles in the winter months.
The tents have electric blankets.
Are braai (BBQ) facilities provided and do we need to bring our own firewood?
Each of the tents and cottages has its own braai stand.
We sell braai wood, cheaper pine wood for hot tubs, charcoal and firelighters at reception.
Is bedding and towels provided?
Yes, all bedding is provided in both tents and Cottages.
Bath towels are provided, but we advise bringing your own swimming towels.
Is the water on the reserve safe to drink or should we bring our own?
The taps use borehole water, which has been tested and is safe to drink. Bottled water is also available for purchase at reception.
What type of electricity do you use - is there load shedding?
Waterberg Cottages & Africamps Waterberg is fully solar-powered, so there is no load shedding. As applicances and fridges run on solar power, no heaters are allowed. Blow dryers can be used during the day.
We do have a backup generator for cloudy weather.
What is the WiFi speedlike - can I work remotely?
All of the tents and cottages have WiFi. We have just changed our service provider and we hope that the WiFi will be much more reliable.

Do I need to book activities in advance?
The star show is weather dependent. When a show is being presented all guests will be informed.

Other activities can be arranged upon arrival, subject to availability, but a ''heads up'' about your interest given in advance is always helpful.
The Village Tour and the History Tour both need to be arranged in advance and are subject to availability.
Is there a swimming pool?
Yes, we have a 15m swimming pool suitable for swimming and volleyball. It is solar heated to reduce the chill. Guests should bring their own swimming towels.
What months are best for astronomy in the Waterberg?
May to the end of Sept (dry winter months) offers the clearest skies. Winter nights are cold but visibility is excellent.
Will Doctor Philip Calcott's Astronomy show be available and do I need to book?
Shows are weather-dependent. If skies are clear, Doctor Calcott usually presents a show every weekend and occasionally during the week. All guests are informed when a show is scheduled. Do inform reception of your interest.
Do you need riding experience for horse riding?
The experienced guides cater for all levels of experience in horse riding.
Riding needs to be arranged in advance as Waterberg Horse Trails attemtps to march horse to rider.

Is horse riding suitable for children, and what is the minimum age?
Pony rides can be arranged for little children in the garden. Older children can be taken out on leading reins.
What animals are on the private game reserve?
The reserve has giraffe, buffalo, rhino, eland, sable, roan, tsessebe, red hartebeest, wildebeest, kudu, impala, reedbuck, waterbuck, blesbuck, zebra, warthogs, jackals, aardvark, porcupine, bush babies, vervet monkeys, baboons, ostriches, and more.
Please book a game drive or a horse ride in order to explore the reserve.
What birds can be seen at Waterberg Cottages & Africamps Waterberg?
Over 149 species have been recorded, including the very rare pygmy geese and a pair of secretary birds. Jessica Haywood is our resident birding specialist.
Which are the best months for birding?
November to April is best for migratory species. Resident species are visible year-round.
Are massages available on site?
Yes, spa treatments and massages are available. Prior notice is always helpful as these need to be arranged.
Can we see the Big 5 in the Waterberg?
We do not have lions or elephants on the property, but there are Big 5 Game Reserves in the Waterberg that take day visitors.

How far is Waterberg Cottages & Africamps Waterberg from Gauteng?
We are approximately 2,5 hours from Pretoria and 3 hours from Johannesburg.

The GPS may take you on an impassable road. The GPS cannot always discern the best route where there are multiple farm tracks.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS A GATE CODE which reception will send to you.
Will we need a 4x4?
Any car with reasonable clearance will manage the roads. Very low luxury cars may have difficulty. There is 3kms of municipal dirt road and then 5kms of sandy track.
How far are the nearest shops?
Our reception shop sells ice, ice creams, some cold drinks, and a few basic supplies. As a self-catering establishment, we recommend bringing any additional food and beverages.
For everything else, please stock up in Vaalwater.
How far is the nearest town?
The last town in which to buy supplies is Vaalwater, approximately 30kms from our reserve.
The Zeederberg Centre in Vaalwater is convenient for last-minute supplies. There you will find:
- Spar Supermarket - open on weekends for part of the day.
- Tops Liquor Store
- Carla's Bakery
- Black Mamaba Curio Shop
- Syringa Cafe.
- Please note that many shops close midday on Saturday for the weekend .
For fuel, go to Puma Garage.
The Vaalwater Pharmacy is open on Saturday mornings..
Is there a restaurant at Waterberg Cottages & Africamps Waterberg?
We do not have a restaurant, but we do provide baskets which include some pre-prepared items and some items you will cook for yourself.

- Braai Basket (R275 per adult, R160 per child)
These need to be ordered in advance.
Luxury catering options are available for special occasions by prior arrangment.
When can we check in and when must we check out?
Check in: 2pm / Check out:10am
Self check-in is available for tent guests. Please communicate your ETA with reception.
What do large groups staying in the tents do about catering and communal eating?
- Windsong Cottage can be booked to serve as a communal venue for up to 24 guests. It has a large verandah, garden, kitchen facilities and four bathrooms.
- The combination of garden, sunken fire pit, adjacent hot tub, spacious stoep and two bench tables that each seat 12 works well - particularly at night with the romance of paraffin lamps, firelight and garden lights.
- Butterfly Cottage (adjacent to the pool) can be booked for outdoor gatherings of up to 12. The cottage provides a small kitchen, a picnic table and a bathroom. Guests can arrange for a volleyball net at the pool.
Can you help me create something out of the ordinary?
We can help you with the romantic exclusivity needed for a marriage proposal or we can help you craft an intimate luxury dinner for a select group.
We can also assist in helping you with a self-catering space in which your whole group can gather.
